Exterior metalwork

This gallery displays a selection of pieces created by Denys Mitchell to enhance exterior spaces such as gardens and courtyards. These were for private or public clients, or for personal use.

He had a signature style which expressed his love of art and history, passion for his craft and sense of humour.

'Hinc Sanitas' was made for the Royal College of Surgeons and installed in their courtyard in Nicolson Street, Edinburgh. The title for the sculpture was taken from the College motto, which means 'From here, health'. It was created in beaten bronze and represents a stylised pair of hands holding a scalpel.

This piece was unveiled by the Right Honourable Norman Irons, Lord Provost of Edinburgh on 6th December 1994.

Sadly, as with Cnihtengild in London, this has also been removed from its original setting and replaced with another installation. Denys' sculpture is currently held in storage by the Royal College of Surgeons.

The majority of these works can be found in the Scottish Borders. The business grew locally as the increasing presence of his work in many Border towns raised his profile. Word of mouth, more than any other form of advertising, was instrumental in generating custom.

It is a pleasure for me to recognise my father's work when I see it in different Border locations. My father had a lasting affection for many of his commissions. His legacy lives on in the community, even after his death.
